a7r3 & GM135
I am glad to have this apportunity to test the a7r3 & GM135. I am existing happy user of a7r2 with various native lens like FE 16-35 F4, T28-75 F2.8, FE 55 F1.8, and FE 85 F1.8. These are very good camera and lens which helping me take good wedding and commercial shot already. I was invited by YL Camera Malaysia partner with Sony Malaysia to this special experiencing event. In this event, invited guest can loan any prepared camera and lens to experiencing the shooting with 6 ready model. I choose a7r3 & GM135, my initial option was a7r4 with GM85, however a7r4 only have one and being used by YL Camera’s staff and the GM85 was loaned to another guest which acted quicker than me T.T. Hence, I write this post as a mini review to share my experience and some images I took. All the images I took with the camera was just simple post-editing in my tablet Adobe Lightroom app.
Later almost ending of the event, I managed to grab the a7r4 with FE 35mm. I played a while with the body and lens. Not feeling impressive as I just spent little time with it.
Ampang Glass House
Firstly, the party location was at Ampang Glass House which is an incredible 3.5 storey restaurant. The invited guest can enjoy the food, desert and wine while having fun with shooting. This 3.5 storey building consist of outdoor garden, pond, pool for party.
Sony Aplha 7r3
First impression of holding the a7r3 was the better ergonomic handling. The body offer relatively good burst rate at 10fps with mechanical shutter and super impressive AI eye auto focus. Me, as a wedding and commercial photographer, the 10fps are more than enough for capturing moment while great eye AF is more important. Last but not least, the improved battery life comfort me while in working condition. Enjoy below images that I shot during the event using the loaner unit a7r3 & GM135.
A7r2 VS A7r3
Compare with A7r2 which I am the existing user of it. I love a7r3 better because of the burst rate at 10fps over 5fps, and the significant point is the AI eye AF increase the percentage of success sharp eye image almost 80% better than a7r2. Of course the another point was the battery life. Every user of A7 mark 2 series know the battery are using NP-FW50 is a disappointment and 3 to 4 spare battery is a must every time on job or shooting where a7r3 is using NP-FZ100 is more than double of the battery life.
GM 135mm F1.8 – King of Portrait
This a very impressive portrait lens. I have no other word to describe it. See the images for your self how sharp and the beautiful bokeh.
A7r4 and FE 35mm F1.8
a7r4 increase the mega pixal count straight up to 62MP over 42MP of a7r2 and a7r3. I am happy to hear that but it is just a optional for me. I don’t really need 62MP while 42MP already offer very good quality and detail for me to work on it. Another reason is post-editing workflow, 62MP increase the processing effort and slowing down my workflow and this is a deal breaker for me. Probably the better eye AF is good to hear that but a7r3 is already very good enough as wedding photographer. On the other hand about the new FE 35mm, with offering F1.8 that 1 stop faster than many e-mount 35mm rivals out there (Sony Zeiss 35mm F2.8 and Samyang AF 35mm F2.8). This lens is cost affordable at around MYR 2000 which is much cheaper than Sony Zeiss F2.8 or F1.4 version. This new version 35mm offer relatively good IQ but not impressive. The purple fringing is the thing I need to take care for this lens.
